How to Get a Custom Cursor on a Chromebook (No Download)

ChromeOS has nothing to sideload, so a browser extension is the natural way to a custom cursor.

Why downloads don’t apply on ChromeOS

On Windows you install .cur or .ani cursor files. ChromeOS doesn’t work that way: there’s nothing to sideload and no system folder to drop cursor files into. Instead, everything happens inside the browser through an extension. That sounds like a limitation, but it’s actually simpler and safer — there are no files to download and nothing that can be blocked at the operating-system level.

The steps (about 30 seconds)

Open the Chrome Web Store on your Chromebook, add Cursor Customiser, pin it to your shelf/toolbar, then open the popup and tap a cursor. It applies immediately, with no files downloaded. Drag the size slider to make it bigger or smaller, and toggle trails or click effects if you want them. To go back to the normal pointer, flip the toggle off — it reverts cleanly.

Can you do it without an extension?

Not a proper custom cursor. ChromeOS has a built-in setting to enlarge the pointer and change its colour (Settings → Accessibility → Mouse and touchpad), but it can’t load your own cursor images or animated cursors. For real custom cursors, a lightweight browser extension is the practical, no-download route on a Chromebook.

School Chromebooks

If the Chrome Web Store is available on your account, this works — nothing touches the system, so there’s nothing to be blocked at the OS level. Some managed school accounts block the Web Store or restrict new extensions; that’s a policy set by your school, not by the extension. If downloads are locked down but the Web Store is open, a no-download extension is exactly what you want. See our custom cursor unblocked page for that angle.

Will it slow my Chromebook down?

It shouldn’t. Cursor Customiser is small and draws your cursor efficiently; animated cursors are sprite-based and GPU-accelerated. If you ever want maximum performance during a game or a test, just toggle it off for a moment.

The short version

On a Chromebook, skip the downloads entirely: add a Chrome extension, tap a cursor, done. It’s free, needs no account, and works across every normal tab.
