Red Cursors

A red scarf, a red cap, a red jacket

Many of these characters are on the page because of one red thing they wear or carry. Mikasa Ackerman has her red scarf, with ODM blades on hover. Undertale Papyrus wears a red scarf too and swaps to a plate of spaghetti. Subway Surfers Tricky is in her red cap, Kenma Kozume in his red jacket with a handheld console over links, and Sailor Mars is dressed in red with a fire talisman. Ryomen Sukuna reverses the pattern: the red is in his hover image, a cursed flame. All are fan-made.

Orange hair, orange gi, orange juice

The orange half has its own logic. One Piece Nami and Ichigo Kurosaki both have orange hair, and Nami's hover is a tangerine to match. Goku wears his orange gi and swaps to the four-star Dragon Ball. Pochita is round, orange and simple, the clearest at small sizes in his own series set. Fortnite Fishstick is the orange fish with a Chug Jug. Orange Juice Crewmate turns a crewmate into a small bottle of juice with an orange glove. Saffron Mango Pixel is the one original design in this half.

Where a red cursor helps and where it clashes

Red is the colour websites reserve for warnings: error messages, delete buttons, sale badges, unread counts. A red pointer is easy to find on a calm white or grey page for exactly that reason, since little else there is red. On a page already full of red alerts or banners it competes with them. Red on black has less contrast than yellow or white on black, so in dark mode the orange packs, or a larger size, are the easier option. Undertale Soul, a plain red heart, is the simplest shape to test with.

Which Red pack to pick

For the simplest shape, take Undertale Soul, a red heart with a yellow SAVE star on hover, or Among Us Red Crewmate with its Emergency Meeting button. Pochita is the pick for small sizes. Teachers and students might enjoy Cheeky Grade Stamp while marking in a browser tab. For dark mode, lean orange: Saffron Mango Pixel or Goku. Volleyball fans have two packs, Shoyo Hinata with a volleyball and Kenma Kozume. For younger children, Bluey Bingo and Bluey Chilli are gentle.

Where Red cursors work

Red cursors show on web pages in Chrome, Edge, Brave and Opera GX: YouTube, Netflix and Pinterest in a tab, anime trackers and wikis, manga readers and Google Classroom. A red pack also sits well with a red accent colour in Opera GX. They do not appear in the Netflix or YouTube apps, in games, on chrome:// pages, in the Chrome Web Store or on the desktop.
